Embracing Autism: The Challenge of Our Time

I believe that the challenge of understanding and serving those with autism is an endeavor which will change our world for the better.

Understanding the neurological differences and the ways in which those with autism think differently will be of infinite benefit to those on the spectrum, but also to those not on it.  The abilities of those with autism, and the endeavor to find ways to support and accommodate those differences, will enable so many breakthroughs that enhance the abilities of those who are neurotypical.  People with autism have so many talents and insights into things that may not be accessible to those who are neurotypical.  I believe that neurotypical people have done a great job of building efficient systems that are practical and productive.  But the kind of thinking and problem-solving that those with autism have will be able to weave even more intricate layers of understanding and principles of co-operation into the fabric of how we interact, understand, and live and work with each other.

The current world is pretty much geared towards neurotypical persons.  The collaboration of both those on the autism spectrum, and those who are not, will lead to many discoveries and principles, of how our minds work and how we interact, communicate with and understand each other, and capitalize on our strengths, accommodate and support each other in our weaknesses, and multiply the fruitfulness of our combined passions, interests, gifts, talents, abilities, and efforts.

The challenge of autism and the potentials it represents, will be a great test of our attempts to incorporate all human beings into the great projects of humanity, culture, and our ability to recognize the inherent value and dignity of every human person.
